Parent Corner-Important things to tell your child

What do you wish you knew before having kids? There are so many things that you probably wish you know and still want to know. One resource I like is Lewis Howes’ website. It has a lot of information about connecting with your child. It also has information about how to heal from some of the things you missed in your childhood. He talks with a guest speaker about what he wishes he knew before having kids. That list could be a mile long, but some main ideas are:

  • make a point to spend uninterrupted time together (even 10 minutes). No one is allowed to look at a screen during this time. Just you and your child looking at each other and talking.
  • tell your kids that you love them, they are important, the things you do are to take care of them the best way you can. You may have to be apart when you are at work, you may be distracted when cooking or other tasks but they are still more important than anything.
  • Explain to your child that people show love in different ways. Parents show it by working hard to provide for their children, saying I love you, hugs, helping their partner and their children etc. Learn about how your child feels loved.
  • Let your child know that no matter what mistakes they make that you will always love them and be there for them. They can always come to you to figure out problems together.
  • The biggest thing that I have learned since I started working with children is:

What are some things that you wish you knew before having kids?
