What’s the best way to deal with negative thoughts?

The best way to deal with negative feelings is to stop and challenge them. If your think “I am so stupid”. Don’t let that go. Stop what you are doing and challenge that thought.

  • Am I really stupid?
  • Is this something that is really challenging and I need to slow down and think about it?
  • Is this something I have never done before?
  • Was this a careless mistake? Am I really focused?
  • Is this something I can ask for help with?

Who is really the one that is saying that you are stupid? Is this something you learned in childhood? Is this the internal monolog that you have about yourself? Currently is there someone in your life who is saying negative things about you?

When people have a negative internal monolog, I refer to that as their “dragon”. When you think negative things about yourself it is the dragon talking. Everyone has negative thoughts like “I am not good enough.” “No one likes me”. This is the time that you need to be strong and stand up to the dragon. You might say to the dragon, “I am not good at soccer, but I can practice. I have made improvement. That does not mean I am stupid”.

If the dragon says, “no one likes me”. Challenge that thought. “I have people who like me. I am a good person. It is more important right now for me to like myself.”

Here is a link to Mayo clinic for more information about negative thinking. Take some time to look it over. It is worth the effort to challenge these negative thoughts. You are worth it.
