There Has to be a Better Way

Daily writing prompt
What’s the thing you’re most scared to do? What would it take to get you to do it?

The thing I am most scared of is quitting my full time job and working for myself. It would be a better way to be flexible and make changes that I want. I currently feel held back and I feel I can do more to contribute to the world. I have skills and training but I feel restricted by the “system” of insurance coverage and what we can do in the school setting.

My dad was an oncologist who specialized in breast cancer. Early in his career he saw the way medical treatment was done and how patients were being treated. He said “There has to be a better way”. He had a huge impact on the research in breast cancer and improvement in patient care. I want to have an impact on how mental health is treated. We do not exist in a bubble. Improving mental health needs to include family, friends, and community.

This goes along with my dream job post . I want to work with people who then are able to go on to make a positive impact on the world. This positive impact could be:

  • Parents who are better able to communicate with their child
  • Parents who communicate better with each other
  • Children who are better able to regulate their emotions (this impacts both home and school)
  • Adults who are better able to regulate their emotions
  • Teachers who are able to recognize the accommodations needed in the classroom in terms of communication and mental health
  • Children who recognize inappropriate or bullying behavior and doing something to stop it
  • Normalizing talking about emotions

There is not going to be one big event or one powerful person who is going to improve our lives significantly. We have to do most of the work ourselves. If enough of us take responsibility and share knowledge then change will happen.
